About us

We are a self-organized group called 'UMBAJA'.
Umbaja means 'trumpet' in a local Sudanese language.
We chose this name as a memorial to a Sudanese freedom fighter killed in 1899 when the Sudanese people was fighting the British colonial power for independence. He was a trumpet player.
We are the witnesses of human rights violations, war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in Sudan.
We fought against it and we are still fighting.
We are  the witnesses of the story of refugees in Europe and around the world.
We fought for it and we are still fighting.
Socially, politically and economically.

Our History

On May 24, 2014, with other supporters, we established the Refugee Protest Camp in Hannover as a political action that would like to show the following:

  • The catastrophic situation in Sudan.
  • The situation of refugees in Germany
On July 28, 2015, we developed a new long-term strategy. We have founded UMBAJA organisation so we can continue on our struggle.

The idea

We have developed the idea of the economic self-empowerment of refugees through job opportunities.
This idea can actually be implemented here in Lower Saxony, because our experiences with society, especially in cities like Hannover and Hildesheim, have shown us that the residents are prepared to give support and react positively to refugees who start initiatives in order to become self-employed to change their situation.
To answer the question
"How can we turn this idea into reality?"
we put the following equation on:

Self-organization of refugees + social support = empowerment of refugees

Good * self-organization + right * support from society = real * empowerment of the refugees

We are committed to a strong community based on solidarity, the alternative economy and the improvement of people's living conditions as well as income and education. We campaign for these goals in society and provide information about refugees and the economy, seek public attention and raise funds to organize activities to overcome various refugee issues.
